The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a foundational text in the study of yoga philosophy, attributed to the sage Patanjali. Composed of 195 concise aphorisms (sutras), the text systematically presents the principles and practices of yoga, guiding the seeker toward a state of pure awareness, known as samadhi. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras are divided into four chapters:
In this introductory study, we focus on the first twelve sutras of Chapter I, Samadhi Pada. These verses lay the groundwork for understanding the nature of yoga, its purpose, and the initial stages of mental discipline.
Sanskrit:
अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥१॥
Transliteration:
atha yoga-anuśāsanam || 1 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Now, begins the discipline of yoga.”
Patanjali opens with the word “atha,” signifying that the seeker is prepared for the journey of yoga. Yoga here implies not just physical postures but a discipline for calming the mind and attaining self-realization.
Sanskrit:
योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥२॥
Transliteration:
yogaś-citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ || 2 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Yoga is the cessation of the modifications of the mind.”
This is the essence of yoga as defined by Patanjali. The mind is seen as fluctuating with thoughts and emotions. Yoga aims to still these fluctuations, leading the mind to a state of calm and clarity.
Sanskrit:
तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपेऽवस्थानम् ॥३॥
Transliteration:
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe-avasthānam || 3 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Then, the seer (Self) abides in its own nature.”
When the mind’s fluctuations cease, the true nature of the self (drashta) shines forth. This is the goal of yoga, where the soul rests in pure awareness.
Sanskrit:
वृत्तिसारूप्यमितरत्र ॥४॥
Transliteration:
vṛtti-sārūpyam-itaratra || 4 ||
Translation and Commentary: “At other times, the self appears to take on the form of the mind’s modifications.”
In the absence of nirodha (cessation), the mind’s fluctuations lead one to identify with temporary mental states, emotions, and perceptions, mistaking these for the self.
Sanskrit:
वृत्तयः पञ्चतय्यः क्लिष्टाक्लिष्टाः ॥५॥
Transliteration:
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭa-akliṣṭāḥ || 5 ||
Translation and Commentary: “There are five kinds of fluctuations in the mind, some painful, others not painful.”
These mental modifications or vrittis can be either beneficial or detrimental to one’s peace of mind and spiritual growth. Recognizing these helps in differentiating between helpful and obstructive thoughts.
Sanskrit:
प्रमाणविपर्ययविकल्पनिद्रास्मृतयः ॥६॥
Transliteration:
pramāṇa-viparyaya-vikalpa-nidrā-smṛtayaḥ || 6 ||
Translation and Commentary: “There are five types of mental modifications: right knowledge, wrong knowledge, imagination, deep sleep, and memory.”
Patanjali categorizes the modifications in the mind, offering a systematic way to observe them. Each type affects the mind differently and influences our perception and understanding of reality.
Sanskrit:
प्रत्यक्षानुमानागमाः प्रमाणानि ॥७॥
Transliteration:
pratyakṣa-anumāna-āgamāḥ pramāṇāni || 7 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Direct perception, inference, and testimony are sources of right knowledge.”
These three are the accepted sources of valid knowledge (pramāṇa) in yoga philosophy, serving as guides for determining truth and reality.
Sanskrit:
विपर्ययो मिथ्याज्ञानमतद्रूपप्रतिष्ठम् ॥८॥
Transliteration:
viparyayo mithyā-jñānam-atad-rūpa-pratiṣṭham || 8 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Misconception is false knowledge based on non-existent or distorted reality.”
Wrong knowledge, or viparyaya, arises when the mind mistakes something for what it is not. This leads to confusion and misunderstanding, further agitating the mind.
Sanskrit:
शब्दज्ञानानुपाती वस्तुशून्यो विकल्पः ॥९॥
Transliteration:
śabda-jñāna-anupātī vastu-śūnyo vikalpaḥ || 9 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Imagination is a mental modification that relies on words without actual substance.”
Vikalpa, or imagination, is when the mind constructs ideas or images that do not correspond to reality. Though sometimes creative, it can also lead to illusion and distraction.
Sanskrit:
अभावप्रत्ययालम्बना तमोवृत्तिर्निद्रा ॥१०॥
Transliteration:
abhāva-pratyaya-ālambanā tamo-vṛttir-nidrā || 10 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Sleep is the modification of the mind that has the form of emptiness and is based on tamas (inertia).”
Sleep (nidra) represents a state of inactivity in the mind. Though it offers rest, it is still a modification that can obscure awareness.
Sanskrit:
अनुभूतविषयासंप्रमोषः स्मृतिः ॥११॥
Transliteration:
anubhūta-viṣaya-asaṁpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ || 11 ||
Translation and Commentary: “Memory is the retention of experienced objects.”
Smriti, or memory, stores past experiences, allowing them to be recalled. While it has its uses, it can also bind the mind to past experiences, preventing it from remaining present.
Sanskrit:
अभ्यासवैराग्याभ्यां तन्निरोधः ॥१२॥
Transliteration:
abhyāsa-vairāgyābhyāṁ tan-nirodhaḥ || 12 ||
Translation and Commentary: “The cessation of mental modifications is brought about by practice and non-attachment.”
This verse introduces the essential practices for controlling the mind: abhyasa (practice) and vairagya (non-attachment). Together, they cultivate discipline and detachment, which are crucial for reaching the goal of yoga.
